Left: Double Loco Moco ... a local favorite of two scoops of rice (that sticky medium grain rice, not that Uncle Ben's stuff), one scoop of macaroni salad, two patties of hamburger covered with brown gravy and two eggs.
Right: Laulau Plate ... One laulau made of pork/chicken/fish steamed in luau leaves (like spinach but not) inside a packet of ti leaves, lots of kalua pig (pork roasted in an underground imu or earthen oven), two scoops of rice and ubiquitous one scoop of mac salad.
These dishes are known as heart attack special #1 and #2 (heh).
And no, I didn't have one of these. I thought better and had a grilled mahimahi sandwich and water instead. I drew these two dishes from pics that were staring me in the face as I ate my healthy sandwich. After lunch, I walked out the door with the nagging urge to turn around :) .
Great sketch!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I must admit I'm having trouble getting my head around the idea of eggs with gravy!!!
Hmmm...wise choice on the mahimahi sammy.
ReplyDeleteI would have added a pineapple and coconut salad, though. mmm.....
Save me a seat! : )
Cheers!
Anita - Hehe, you've gotta try it! :)
ReplyDeleteKate - I made that note just for you, my personal health guru. I figured you'd be proud of me. I'll have to take you there when you visit. :)
Great sketches, Joan! Oooooh, that pineapple and coconut salad sounds delicious! :)
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOSH! This looks fabulous! And what a terrific job you did presenting it!

Joan, I have been getting posts from your site for quite a while now. The drawing, "Bliss," is beautiful! I could almost feel the sun and hear the ocean. Now, if I could only feel the nap!
ReplyDeleteI think those fantastic lunches at the take out would definitely provoke a nap!
The accuracy, detail, use of values and composition of your work is exceptional. Every visit to "Drawing on Nature" inspires me to keep practicing!
LOVE this. Love the drawing and the explanation. The heart attack special! Eggs and gravy? I can't even imagine that! Your lunch definately sounded the best. And, yep, save me a seat too.
ReplyDeleteAmazing! I was thinking heart attack specials all the way through until I got to your alternative description!
ReplyDeleteYum! Don't know how you were able to just let all those yummies sit long enough for you to draw them.
