Top 100 Botany Blogs

Dragon fruit ... sounds and looks like famine food that is roasted over open flames and eaten by medieval beasts doesn't it? But on the contrary, dragon fruits are sweet, succulent fruit that tastes a cross between strawberries and prickly pears! No wonder they are called Strawberry pears in some parts of the world. They are so juicy, the nectar drips down my chin every time I eat it. I found these at the local farmer's market and they are still in season. Dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus of Cactaceae or Cactus Family, for those botanists out there), were probably imported from Taiwan so no, not medieval at all. : )

I felt inclined to add its scientific name here to justify the honor of being included in Top 100 Botany Blogs in the Online College Blogs. I'm down there at #76 in case you're looking. It really is an honor since I'm a botanist and well, the resources they list are great : )!

I had no idea - either I have never been attentive enough to notice these or they just aren't available in the midwest. This is a very cool sketch.

Hi Joan...a fan of yours from Hong Kong...originally from Canada. Seems we have the same taste in fruits, and a love of orchids too. Just had to say hello...here's my version of Dragon Fruit: http://richard-dabreu.blogspot.com/2009/01/dragon-fruit.html

(Hope the link works...I'm really an idiot on the computer!)
Cheers, Richard

Glad I arrived in time to add my congratulations. It's always such a fantastic artistic feast here, Joan.

I've missed so many posts but I did go far enough back to see that splendid chicken house. Wow! Can't wait to see the moving day pictures.

Thanks everyone! There is a yellow variety that is even sweeter than the pink one. Wish you could see the insides ... like a white-polka-dotted banana!
