Day 7 of 21: Father's shoes

I spent about 20 min on this ... a drawing of my dad's work shoes. Actually, my dad passed 11 years ago and his shoes have sat on a shelf downstairs since. I've been cleaning everywhere around it but couldn't bring myself to toss it out. Before I do, I thought I'd sketch it and perhaps take this opportunity to share my favorite memories of him.

My dad was a happy kind of guy. In fact, he was unusually friendly and as children, my brothers and I would never know who would be waiting at our dinner table when we got home. Often, we'd find that my dad had befriended tourists that had arrived on cruise ships and invited them home, especially if they didn't know their way around our town. And of course, they never left empty-handed. :) People in Hawaii are known for their "aloha" spirit and I believe my dad lived it every day. I really miss his laugh.

Wow, Joan. Thanks for sharing this. Wish I had had a dad like that. He sounds like he was such a good man. I would hang onto his boots until you are positive 100% that you are ready to let them go. That might be never. You know? Thanks again for sharing. Nice drawing.

Did I ever tell you that I "met" your dad in a dream before I married Bruce? I remember waking up and asking Bruce if your dad had a big smile and when he said yes I told him about my dream. I felt like it was your dad's way of welcoming me to the family. Sure wish I had gotten to meet him. Put the boots away when you are ready, but don't toss them.

Thanks Kate. I think you would have liked my dad. He told really bad jokes and was always laughing. I think he would have liked you cuz you would have laughed at his jokes. hehe.

Hey Shannon, it would be Dad to welcome you to the family! :) I do believe he knows what a positive addition you are to our family! Dad would have loved you to bits! Love you sis!

Thanks May! Happy-go-lucky is exactly how I would have described him. Thanks for your thoughtful comment. It made me smile. :)

Thanks for visiting my blog, Joan.
And I love the drawing of your dad's boots, that is very special.
It seems we have a bit in common. I also lost my Dad 11 years ago, and he was also very friendly, and would befriend strangers much like your dad...and you are in Hawaii? I'll be relocating there later this year :)

Nice drawing.. My father is no more, he was working in a bank and always worn black leather shoes.

Your Dad sounds wonderful, and from what I know of you, his spirit carries on! I say keep those boots.

Lovely sketch Joan. And I agree with Kate, hang on to them. I have a pair of my grandmother's winter gloves — they've never fit me, but I like having that physical connection to someone who was very special and important to me.
