Flow front

We made a special trip down to the lava flow front this weekend and caught a glimpse of the lava entering the ocean about a half a mile away. Huge billows of steam blew bits of rock up to form a small black sand beach near the entry way. Pretty cool. Smells of the trip: salty ocean breeze, newly formed pahoehoe rocks heating in the sun, ripe guava picked off a nearby tree, and a tall glass of Heiferweisen at Luquin's in Pahoa. I did this very quick watercolor to capture the moment.

Wow, great painting!!! I thought you took this illustration from a book at first, then I read that you painted it. Really well done, Joan. Sounds like an interesting adventure.

Mahalo Kate. Yes, it was a great adventure spent with good friends, which made it extra special. Thanks for the very generous comment! :)

Brilliant Joany Y. You sure did 'capture the moment'. Can't image seeing a volcano erupting but you sure gave us the taste (and smells!).

Wow! This one is so good! When I read that it was "a quick watercolor" I was like, this would have taken me like, three days!!! Awesome-keep it up!! ;) About blogging... hmm... :)

Thanks so much Joan! The volcano was erupting uphill from where we were and if we stayed until dark, we would have seen the red hot lava flowing down the cliff side! Thank you!

Hey Al, thanks for visiting! Did you get your sketchbook yet? ;)

Wow - this is good! I'm glad you said it was a lava flow - looks a little apocalyptic.
