Fern fiddlehead
I spent the day botanizing with friends in the wet forest on the north part of the island. I forgot how fun it is to take the time to appreciate the incredible flora we have here. This is a little pencil sketch of a fern fiddlehead that I saw today. It reminded me of an alien.

Yes, like the head of an alien! It's strange for me to see the date on your drawing and know that there are things like this growing and thriving in Hawaii.....it is cold and blustery in Chicago and feels like winter already!

Where I grew up (Maine) fiddleheads are a local delicacy, steamed like any other green. *shudder* Aside from that, however, WOW! What a great drawing!

i have never seen a fiddlehead and now i wish they grew around here (if they do, i've never seen one!) so unusual and such a wonderful subject. reminds me of shells - such a beautiful drawing.
