Boy and his dog

While riding the bus in Manhattan, I saw this guy and his dog hanging out outside a store. It was a scene that made me laugh for some reason, so I quickly took a photo. I think it was the image of the guy, so absorbed in his ipod, with his dog so interested in something else that made me take notice. So, I painted my first non-EDM-challenge, non-sketch watercolor painting from the photo! Fun! Fun!

This is an appealing painting; it says someting about the disconnect that technology can create between friends. :)

Tee hee hee...made me chuckle as well. I love how the dog has such an alert posture, and her owner is so absorbed in technology. Great juxtaposition.

Brian - Thanks buddy.
Kate - Thanks ... I wish I could recall what the dog was looking at ... probably the hot dog vendor. :)
Tracy - Thanks! I had fun with the bg.
Mariana - Reflections are hard, aren't they? I made a mental note to practice more. Thanks much my friend.

Hi Joan, my favourite part of this painting is how you captured the texture of the clothing using shaddow and the boys natural stance. Really love painting.

Now Jo, you're just getting too good at this now! This is brilliant. I can see why the scene caught your attention (especially with the teeny dog!. It makes a great painting. Fantastic Jo.

This painting reminds me of a Norman Rockwell. I say this at the risk of offending you, as I know some contemporary critics have a low opinion of Rockwell and that has seeped into the popular culture. However, even those who feel he wasted his talent do not deny the brilliance of his skills so be assured I mean it as the best kind of compliment.

Rockwell was a storyteller. In his own words: "I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed." That is what I see when I look at your painting. A slice of life that otherwise may have gone unnoticed. That is what you have captured with your gifted eyes and talented hands. It's a rare ability to be able to elevate the ordinary, Joan. Don't ever stop.
